Relaxation Training

Relaxation training refers to a group of evidence-based techniques that target the body’s physiological stress response to promote calm and reduce tension. Chronic stress and anxiety often lead to increased muscle tension, shallow breathing, and heightened physiological arousal, which can reinforce emotional distress and physical discomfort. By intentionally teaching the body to return to a balanced state, relaxation training supports both psychological and physical well-being.

Treatment integrates methods such as diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, and mindfulness practices. Over time, these skills help promote awareness of internal stress cues and greater control over physiological responses to stress. Relaxation skills can also improve concentration, sleep, pain management, and emotion regulation.

Relaxation training is most effective when incorporated into a broader therapy plan to help integrate these skills in daily life, enhance resilience, and prevent stress from escalating into chronic anxiety or burnout.
